What should i wear in the Atlas Mountains & Sahara Desert?

When visiting Morocco’s smaller villages and venturing into the Sahara Desert, it’s important to dress respectfully and consider the local customs and climate. Here are some guidelines on appropriate attire:

1. Modesty is Key:
– In smaller villages and conservative areas, it’s advisable to dress modestly, especially for women. This means avoiding revealing clothing like short skirts, shorts, and low-cut tops.
– Opt for loose-fitting, lightweight clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Long skirts, loose pants, and maxi dresses are good choices.

2. Cultural Sensitivity:
– Respect the local culture by avoiding clothing with offensive slogans or images.
– It’s common for women to cover their heads with a scarf or shawl as a sign of respect. You may choose to carry a scarf with you for this purpose.

3. Comfortable and Practical Clothing:
– Given the desert environment, it’s essential to wear breathable fabrics that provide protection from the sun.
– Choose lightweight and long-sleeved shirts or blouses to shield your skin from the harsh sun and potential sandstorms.
– Long, loose pants or maxi skirts are comfortable options for both men and women.
– Don’t forget to bring a lightweight jacket or sweater for cooler evenings in the desert.

4. Footwear:
– Comfortable and sturdy closed-toe shoes are recommended, especially for walking in sandy or uneven terrains.
– In the desert, sandals or flip-flops may not provide adequate protection, so it’s best to opt for closed shoes or lightweight hiking boots.

5. Sahara Desert-Specific:
– When camping or spending the night in the Sahara Desert, it can get chilly, especially during the winter months. Pack warm layers such as a sweater or jacket, socks, and a hat to stay cozy during the cool desert nights.

Remember, these are general guidelines, and it’s always a good idea to research specific cultural norms and weather conditions before your trip. By dressing respectfully and comfortably, you’ll not only show cultural sensitivity but also have a more enjoyable and immersive experience in Morocco’s villages and the stunning Sahara Desert.
