7-Day Sahara Trekking Adventure Discovering Chegaga’s Majestic Dunes

After a hearty breakfast and loading the camels, we embark on our hike by crossing the pass of Oum Laachar. Following a dry riverbed, we stumble upon a hidden oasis nestled between mountains. Our trek continues with short climbs and descents until we reach our camp on the riverbank of Oued Mhasser. This day’s journey approximately takes 5 hours.

Today, we set off along the captivating river of Oued Mhasser, traversing a pebbly desert. As we approach the great dunes of Chegaga, their magnificence becomes increasingly apparent. Reaching our camp on a plateau, we are treated to a mesmerizing sunset over the dunes. As the stars illuminate the sky, we unwind in traditional tents and savor a delicious meal around the campfire. The duration of this trek is approximately 5 hours.

For those early risers, a breathtaking sunrise over the dunes awaits before breakfast. Afterward, we resume our trek, crossing a dry lake and rocky desert until we arrive at Oued Laatach (known as the “river of thirst”). Along the way, we catch glimpses of nomad camps with their herds of goats. Crossing another rocky desert, we reach our camp near the dunes of Bougarne. Although smaller than the dunes of Chegaga, they still offer panoramic views of the landscape as we witness the sunset. The walking duration for this day is approximately 5 hours.

Our desert trek commences across a rocky desert plateau, lending a mineral essence to the landscape. After a lengthy walk, we arrive at our camp next to Oued Naam, renowned for its well. While we can freshen up, we must be mindful of this precious resource. Expect to walk for about 5 hours on this day.

We set off early as we have a long journey back to Marrakech. Trekking across a plateau adorned with small dunes and a Tamaris forest, we eventually reach the village of Mhamid, the last settlement before the vast Sahara. Here, we bid farewell to our team of camel drivers and embark on a drive back to Marrakech, passing through Zagora and Ouarzazate. We spend the night in Marrakech before departing fully the following day. The walking duration on this day is approximately 4 hours.

On the final day of our trip, we arrange a transfer to the Marrakech airport based on your flight schedule, marking the end of your Sahara trekking adventure in Chegaga for 7 days and 5 nights.
